Leader Cllr Grace Williams, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing and Development Cllr Ahsan Khan, Cabinet Commissioner Cllr Elizabeth Baptiste, and local councillors Cllr Yusuf Patel and Cllr Caramel Quin have visited new 100% social rent housing development in Upper Walthamstow ward
On 14th November councillors visited Hylands Road Estate in Upper Walthamstow ward to see the completion of 120 social rent homes with a mix of 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom flats. 13 of these social rent units are fully accessible for wheelchair users. Hylands Road is Council owned estate which has benefitted from combination of Council funding and GLA affordable Housing funding allowing us to regenerate the estate and deliver 100% social rented homes. These homes will be offered to local people in housing need and something that we should all be very proud of. These homes were built Sixty Bricks. Sixty Brick is the Council’s wholly owned development company with a vision to bring forward affordable, energy efficient, well-designed homes.
Under this current Tory government, the housing crisis has gone from bad to worse and the autumn statement again offered no solutions whatsoever to the Housing crisis across the country. Locally, as a Labour Council, delivering much needed affordable housing to meet the needs of local people is a key priority. In the 2022 Waltham Forest Labour Manifesto, we committed to build 1000 new social rent homes and despite the incredibly challenging climate with interest rates and soaring build cost inflation, we are determined to deliver on this commitment.
